- Kitty Hawk 500 Air Plane
I. Basic information Kitty Hawk 500 has China’s completely independent intellectual property rights. It is a type of airplane that fills the gap of domestic 4-5 light multipurpose airplane. This type of airplane is a domestic airplane designed, tested and produced in full accordance with CCAR-23-R2 aviation regulations. The development of the Kitty Hawk 500 has always been supported by the Civil Aviation Administration of China and monitored by the Xi’an Airplane Approval Center.
Kitty Hawk 500 made its first successful flight on October 26, 2003. Since then, according to the airworthiness test program requirements, more than 50 major test subjects have been successfully completed. Among them, such risk test subjects as engine in-flight shutdown and restart, unpowered glide ratio, spin test and so on are all carried out for the first time in the civil airplane test in our country, and all of them have achieved success. On October 27, 2005, it was awarded the type certificate by the Civil Aviation Administration of China. On May 21, 2007, it obtained the production license issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of China.

II. Kitty Hawk 500 is an ideal primary training model 1. Good maneuverability and excellent comprehensive performance
Kitty Hawk 500 can complete normal take-off, crosswind take-off, take-off climb, route climb, maximum climb rate climb, maximum climb angle climb, level flight, descent, hover, stall recovery, landing, go-around, and other flight actions with high quality.
Kitty Hawk 500 uses push-pull rod hard control system and manual trim. This operation mode is simple in structure, good in reliability, and less affected by external temperature and humidity, thus solving the problems that Cessna 172 and DA40 have unreasonable operating system design, all kinds of steel cables are worn and the failure rate is high.
In the pilot’s flight training, Kitty Hawk 500 can effectively ensure the flight in airspace, landing route, instrument flight, navigation transition, formation, night flight, blind descent and other subjects. The performance of the airplane reaches or exceeds that of the same type of airplane abroad, and it can fully meet the requirements of the single-shot commercial pilot training subject specified in CCAR-141.
2. The maintenance is simple, fast and reliable.
The engines, propellers, communication and navigation, radio compasses and other major airborne equipment selected by the Kitty Hawk 500 have strong working reliability, low maintenance requirements and are simple and easy to operate. Especially the Lycoming engine, which has a good reputation all over the world, has excellent performance and reliable quality. After the hood of the airplane is opened, all parts of the engine can be inspected. In the process of using the engine, there is no requirement for parts to be replaced separately according to the use time period similar to that of other engines, thus reducing the workload of the crew, reducing the probability of failure, greatly reducing the maintenance cost and obviously shortening the preparation time for the airplane to be dispatched again. It is estimated that the fixed inspection cost for DA40 engine is 528 yuan/hour, SR20 is 150 yuan/hour, Cessna 172R is 150 yuan/hour, and Kitty Hawk 500 is only 105 yuan/hour.
3. The airplane has good strength and is suitable for risk training and teaching.
The design of the Kitty Hawk 500 is aimed at the pilot’s teaching and training machine, which has been strengthened in the fuselage structure, landing gear and related supporting points. The airplane adopts a metal fuselage, which is relatively strong in structure and improves the impact resistance and seismic resistance of frequent ups and downs.
Cessna 172 has low structural strength, firewall deformation and crack failures, while Kitty Hawk 500 uses metal fuselage and wings, which is suitable for the primary training features of high landing frequency and rough operation. The DA40 is completely made of composite materials, which is difficult to repair after damage and has high cost. At the same time, the Kitty Hawk 500 has a lower single wing structure, which can resist 13 m/s crosswind, while the Cessna 172 can only resist 8 m/s crosswind, and the SR20 and DA40 can resist 10 m/s crosswind.
4. There is no time limit for takeoff power, which is more conducive to primary flight teaching.
The power unit of the Kitty Hawk 500 is a horizontally opposed 6-cylinder air-cooled 260-horsepower piston engine of the US company TEXTRON LYCOMING. The takeoff power of the engine has no time limit and is more suitable for primary flight teaching that requires frequent use of the takeoff power. The engine of Cessna 172 is 160 horsepower and the engine of DA40 is 135 horsepower. In contrast, the Kitty Hawk 500 has strong power, good maneuverability and good handling performance.
5. Kitty Hawk 500 landing gear and propeller have obvious advantages.
The Kitty Hawk 500 uses variable pitch propellers and retractable landing gears from Hartzell, USA, which can meet the training and teaching requirements of some mid-level trainers. Foreign Cessna 172 series airplane and DA40 are all non-retractable landing gears, which cannot meet all flight teaching requirements. Cessna 172 uses fixed-distance propeller, which has poor efficiency and small range of flight speed variation (maximum cruising speed 228km/h, economic cruising speed 226m/h), and is not conducive to the completion of flight teaching courses. The DA40 uses a composite fuselage with high maintenance costs.
6. The instrument panel uses internal lighting, which is more conducive to instrument and blind descent flight teaching.
The dashboard of the Kitty Hawk 500 is internally illuminated, which is more conducive to instrument and blind landing flight teaching.
7 Good endurance is conducive to shortening the training period.
The maximum range of 1790km and the 8-hour endurance of the Kitty Hawk 500 have obvious advantages as trainer airplane, which can complete more training courses in one flight and significantly improve the training effect, thus shortening the training period of pilots and making the training system of pilots more in line with the requirements of training modern pilots.
8. Kitty Hawk 500 has a larger commercial load.
The maximum commercial load of the Kitty Hawk 500 is 540 kg, while that of Cessna 172 is 371 kg and that of DA40 is 350 kg. A larger commercial load can bring two more pilots in one flight, making teaching and training more intuitive. During the training, the flight instructor and the flight cadets can observe each other’s movements, which is not only helpful for the flight instructor to guide the standardization of the cadets’ movements at any time, but also helpful for easing the tension of the flight cadets, providing a good ergonomic environment for the flight teaching and training, shortening the adaptation period and reducing the flight cost when the flight cadets transition to the advanced trainer.
The Kitty Hawk 500 adopts conventional pneumatic layout, with retractable landing gear at the first three points, cantilever lower single wing of equal chord length, backward simple flap, rectangular full-motion flat tail, swept single vertical tail, single piston engine and two-blade propeller.
The Kitty Hawk 500 was designed in accordance with the requirements of Part 23 of China’s Civil Aviation Regulations (CCAR23R2), and completed all the provisions of the certified test flight required by CCAR23R2, including stall and spin subjects, according to the test flight program approved by the airworthiness authority.
The Kitty Hawk 500 is a light multi-purpose airplane with two rows and four seats in parallel. The basic model is a trainer. It can also be used as a business plane or an airplane for other purposes.
